Heavy Equipment Operator Program

FPDI works in partnership with the Operating Engineers Training Institute of Manitoba (OETIM) to train Heavy Equipment Operators (HEO). OETIM has a reputation for providing leading-edge training in HEO.

This HEO program offers nationally recognized credentials allowing for mobility of skills and certifications throughout Manitoba and other Canadian Provinces.

From 2017 to 2021, 103 Indigenous individuals were trained. 102 completed the program and 64% found employment.

FPDI collaborates with Hockridge Trade School Ltd. in Dauphin, Manitoba, to train Heavy Equipment Operators. Their goal is to provide students with the highest quality learning experience, ensuring they have the best chance of securing employment.

At Hockridge Trade School, the emphasis is on safety and equipment maintenance to safeguard both students and the public. The curriculum covers a variety of topics, including equipment types and procedures, soil types and their impact, slopes and grades, water control, career opportunities, and more.

The next class at Hockridge Trade School in Dauphin begins on January 19, 2026.

Prerequisites

Class 5 Driver’s License

Minimum Grade 9 Education

Physically fit with ability to adapt to rugged working conditions

Ability to perform basic mechanical repairs and maintenance

Program Details

  • 240-hour course – 80 hours classroom study and 160 hours practical
  • 6 weeks in duration
  • Entry level basics of heavy equipment
  • Courses: Protect Self and Others, Pre-Operational Inspections, Earthmoving Operations, Transporting Heavy Equipment and Equipment Maintenance
  • Equipment: Grader, Excavator, Rubber Tire Loader, Rock Truck, Dozer, Mini Excavator and Tractor Loader Backhoe

Earning potential between $18 to $30 per hour depending on years of experience.
