Bricklayer Program

FPDI and Manitoba Building Trades Institute, in collaboration with Bricklayers Local 1, have launched a Pre-apprenticeship Bricklayer Program specifically for Indigenous People. This program offers participants training in employment readiness, safety, and construction skills, facilitating a direct pathway to apprenticeship and employment.

Bricklayers construct and repair various structures using materials like brick, stone, and tiles. Their work includes building walls, floors, and chimneys, as well as preparing surfaces and applying damp proofing. Essential skills for bricklayers include manual dexterity, mechanical aptitude, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work at heights. The job is physically demanding and often performed outdoors, requiring attention to detail and artistic flair.

Safety in construction is emphasized, with measures in place to ensure accident prevention. The program aims to provide a comprehensive blend of training, practical experience, and support for its participants.

Career Opportunities

Bricklayers possess skills that are in high demand across Canada, working primarily for construction companies on various types of buildings, including industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential structures. They can specialize in areas such as stone work, restoration, ornamental work, or the installation of refractories and corrosion-resistant materials.

Similar Trades

There are similarities between bricklayers and other trades like tile setters, concrete finishers, carpenters, and drywall finishers. Experienced bricklayers have opportunities for career advancement, which may include supervisory roles, travel, or transitioning into related fields such as construction management, estimating, or building inspection. They may also choose to become contractors.
